Some people say that cross country (XC) racing is one of the most grueling and demanding sports that you can participate in. Whether it be GNCC style, with the various terrain changes encompassing dirt tracks, woods, rocks, roots, mud, ruts, grass fields, sand pits and motocross, or Baja style where long distances are the norm, XC racing has it all. As demanding as this sport is, it has been growing in recent years, and there are several race circuits in the northeast. Carrillo Racing is currently finishing our first year in the Atlantic Grand Prix series, and we also attended a few GNCC races this year as well. Plans for next year include racing in both the 4x4 Lites class as well as the 30+C Sport class. I will be attending races in other series in addition to the Atlantic Grand Prix, including a new series in CT, the District 6 races in PA, and at least one 6 Hours of America race. We had a successful and fun season in 2007, and we are looking forward to more fun and an even better 2008 season! In the meantime though, we will be modifying the 2004 YFZ450 for XC racing, and doing some upgrades to the 2000 Wolverine to prepare it for racing next year. Lots of things planned, and we'll keep you updated on them all right here! |

Rain.. Lots of it.. All night before the race too.. But it made for a FUN course! Sure, it was muddy, wet, and a bit cold, but the season opener of the NECC's was an enjoyable course and we had a good time that day in spite of the rain. The course was in Union, CT, and that means rocky, mountainous trails, just the kind of terrain I run at home. I was looking forward to this series all winter.
We arrived at the track the night before, it was a 3 1/2 hr drive, and with the race supposed to start at 9am, I wasn't about to drive there in the morning. We woke up to drizzling rain around 6 am and soon hooked up with some old and new friends. Dirtdemon from QB made his way up, and Lil Sprite was there for her first race.. Derno and Tommygun were supposed to make it up there the night previous, but a flat trailer tire delayed them a bit. The turnout of QuadBuilder members there was pretty good, Stef Verkade, Scott Samuels and a few others were there as well.. |

Not a bad start for the season, but not the start I wanted either.. Doc didn't want me pushing it too hard till he gave me the final ok for my wrist, so I was just going to get my points. This was also my first race on the newly rebuilt YFZ, and I only had about an hour on the machine to set it up for the race.
Well, the weather was perfect, a little bit windy, and we would have appreciated a little rain the week before to keep the dust down, but otherwise a perfect day for racing. We rolled in to the pits around 10am and quickly found the Quadbuilder.net crew and started unloading. Its nice when you can roll up to a group of friends, and have a pit as big as ours.. It's also nice when you notice people wearing shirts / hats / sweatshirts from the Quadbuilder.net and I don't even know them yet! |
